Your Abridged Guide to Record Store Day: Black Friday

Ah Black Friday, the day known for its massive sales and the all-out wars that go along with it. People shoving and pushing to get themselves anything they can get their hands on. But Black Friday isn't always about the push and shove of raiding your local Walmart just for some cheap vacuum. Maybe you could spend your Black Friday sitting back and relaxing listening to some new vinyl.

Record Store Day Black Friday is on November 29th and your local record stores will be stocked full of special edition albums from your favorite artists.  From special color designed records to highly limited special releases, here’s an abridged list of some of the special albums you can get your hands on this RSD Black Friday.

First, let's start with a nostalgic one, The 20th-anniversary celebration, The Spongebob Movie Soundtrack on pink and yellow splatter-patterned vinyl! It is a 1LP, white-colored vinyl with yellow and pink blotches of color splattered all along it. It has the friendly yella fella on the front cover and only 6,000 copies will be released. If you’re a Spongebob fan, it's a must-have and for only $29.99 you can get your money, money, money’s worth!

For fans of the Ramones, a first-time vinyl release, it’s a single LP greatest hits compilation of their biggest hits! Limited to only 5,000 copies, this record contains the best hits from their extensive career. From “Blitzkrieg Bop” to “I Wanna Be Sedated” you’ll be bopping to the tunes of the Ramones with this record for only $29.99

If you want more color for your collection, you could get One Republic’s new 2024 album; Artificial Paradise on Gold and Pure Cloudy colored vinyl. This special version of their sixth studio album is limited to only 1,500 copies and features eight new acoustic versions of their songs never before pressed. Since fewer copies are available, this one will be well sought after and therefore is priced at around $55.

Many artists have special edition live albums on vinyl for the first time:

    • Van Halen’s Live in Dallas 1991. A 2LP, previously unreleased and pressed on red vinyl with an etched fourth side.
    • Jimi Hendrix’s Songs for Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts. This LP contains songs from the debut concerts of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys. It’s pressed on blue and violet swirl vinyl.
    • The Byrds/Buffalo Springfield: Live at the Monterey International Pop Festival: A 2LP limited to 3,000 copies, it is pressed on Opaque Rochid and Opaque Sky Blue vinyl. It features both band’s spectacular performances, and it marked a major evolution in rock music.

Rather than deal with the hustle and bustle of fighting through lines at big stores, take some time to visit your local record store and enjoy a chill Black Friday. Make sure to go early to grab the best stuff, and remember to support your local businesses!
