Adults trained to work in road construction graduate Wednesday

The next BY Roads 10-week session in Evansville will take place in January 2025.

11 Tri-State residents will graduate from a program that has trained and prepared them for good-paying jobs in the highway and road construction industry. The graduation happens at 6:30 p.m. after a hiring fair at Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Evansville.

The BY Roads program teaches hands-on skills, including highway construction safety, hand and power tools, skid steer operation, construction math and communications, all at no-cost to the students. It also helps students develop resumes and prepare for interviews with companies that attend a hiring fair.

BY Roads gradates earn two industry certifications—NCCER Core and OSHA-10—plus a certificate for Skid Steer operation and ATSSA Flagger. Potential employees prefer applicants who already have the certifications because they can put them to work quicker.

The class was developed to address the Indiana’s construction industry need for trained, reliable workers. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Indiana Construction Roundtable Foundation (ICRF) and Vincennes University sponsor the class.

“These jobs pay an average of $24.90 an hour after six months and include health and vacation benefits. But often people have no idea how to access them, so we help with that,” said BY Roads instructor Brad Wallace. “While 11 people may not seem like a lot, the impact spreads beyond the individuals to families, neighborhoods and beyond. As a result, BY Training program doesn’t change just one life, it starts generational change in the community.”
