Charles A. Hyde is President & CEO of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis.
On Thursday, September 29 at 6 pm, Charles Hyde will present the talk Benjamin Harrison’s Republic & the Spirit of Democracy.
“An American citizen could not be a good citizen who did not have a hope in his heart.”
With this ringing invocation, the 23rd President sought to call the United States to a higher purpose and set it on course for the modern era. For Harrison, hope meant cultivating an informed patriotism; protecting civil rights for African Americans; paying fair wages for fair labor; giving
veterans their due; protecting our natural resources, and teaching the next generation the importance of good citizenship and civic service. While today his signal leadership is underknown, there is no mistaking the spirited advocacy of America’s Hoosier President as he
advanced transformative ideas and policies which have come to define our country over the past century.
Charles A. Hyde is President & CEO of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis. A native Hoosier who majored in history at Hanover College, he earlier had successful tenures at Conner Prairie Living History Museum and the Indianapolis Zoo, building a reputation for

Most recently, he successfully spearheaded the organization’s $6 million “Old Glory, New Vision” capital campaign.
