Kulture City initiative with Zoo provides inclusion for visitors with sensory needs

KultureCity provides venues with the ability to expand their visitor inclusion via their Sensory Inclusive™ Certification and sensory bags.

Evansville’s Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden in partnership with KultureCity is proud to announce the beginning of their sensory needs initiative. Various signage is placed throughout the zoo which will alert those with sensory needs or their caretakers as to potentially sensory adverse locations. The majority of the zoo staff has undergone training to create acceptance and inclusion for all visitors. This training for
staff provides insight as to how those with sensory needs may view the world around them.

In addition to the training and signage, sensory bags are also offered to those with sensory needs to be checked out at the main gate. Guests may check out these bags by submitting a photo ID to staff. Guests will then receive their IDs once they return the bag at the end of their visit. Inside the bags, visitors will find the following: sound-dampening headphones, various fidget devices, and a lanyard to identify a visitor as one with sensory needs should they so choose.

KultureCity provides venues with the ability to expand their visitor inclusion via their Sensory Inclusive™ Certification and sensory bags. Their mission is to provide sensory-inclusive spaces across the nation with Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden being the latest addition to those venues. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden in collaboration with the Evansville Zoological Society is constantly seeking to improve and enhance how all visitors engage with the zoo and the natural world around them. The Evansville Zoological Society funds initiatives like KultureCity through the generosity of member and donor support.
