The need for coaches is greater than ever, as the number of athletes joining Special Olympics Indiana continues to grow. This presents a unique opportunity for individuals who are passionate about sports and making a difference in their communities.
Special Olympics Indiana is calling on compassionate and motivated individuals to join their Campaign for Coaches program, an important statewide
initiative that empowers athletes with intellectual disabilities to achieve success on and off the field. The program offers comprehensive training to equip volunteer coaches with the skills needed to make a profound and lasting impact in the lives of these remarkable athletes.
"With more than 19,000 athletes across the state engaged with Special Olympics Indiana, we urgently need dedicated coaches to support these aspiring individuals," said Special Olympics Indiana President and CEO Jeff Mohler. "Our coaches are the heart of our organization,
providing essential guidance, encouragement, and expertise that enable our athletes to thrive."
One such coach is Chris Akers, whose nearly 30-year commitment to Special Olympics Indiana has transformed the lives of countless athletes. Through his dedication and mentorship, Akers not only enhances these athletes’ competitive performance, but also significantly boosts their confidence and overall quality of life.
"Coaching for Special Olympics Indiana has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Akers said. "I was inspired by my love for sports and helping children, and after almost three decades, I can honestly say there's nothing better than being a part of these athletes'
journeys. I'll never forget one young athlete who struggled to walk—over time, we built his strength, and he became one of our fastest runners. Watching that transformation was extraordinary. If you're considering becoming a coach, I promise it will be the best decision you'll
ever make. The fulfillment you'll feel from helping your athletes reach their full potential is unmatched."
“We are reaching out to those who may not yet realize the profound impact they can have as coaches,” Mohler said. "This is a chance to contribute to the development of our athletes, not just in their athletic pursuits but in their confidence and overall well-being."
Special Olympics Indiana invites individuals from all backgrounds to become part of their dedicated coaching team. Through comprehensive training, volunteers will gain the skills and knowledge needed to make a meaningful difference in the lives of athletes with intellectual
disabilities. As coaches, individuals will play a vital role in helping these athletes develop their abilities, build their self-confidence, and achieve their goals.
