YMCA Breaks Ground on Youth Center Renovations and Expansion

The YMCA has been serving the greater Evansville area for 165 years.

The YMCA of Southwestern Indiana hosted a special groundbreaking ceremony to begin renovations to its youth center located at 1930 South Garvin Street in the Glenwood neighborhood.

The CenterPoint Energy YMCA will undergo extensive expansion of its footprint by adding a total of 1800 SqFt to the building, which will include a Community Center and Commercial Grade Teaching Kitchen. Renovations to existing space will include a STEM Lab and enhancements to the building’s entrance. The expansion and renovations will help the YMCA further serve the needs of the community in the areas of education, workforce development, enrichment, and food security.

Funding for the $750,000 renovations is made possible through both private and corporate donations. CenterPoint Energy, as the lead donor, is now the namesake for the YMCA location. The building is owned by the Evansville Housing Authority, who has a long history of partnership with the YMCA. The Y has operated programs in the building for 16 years and serves over 400 youth there each year. With a long-term commitment to the community, the YMCA now has a 40-year lease with the Evansville Housing Authority to operate the space.

Construction is expected to take about five months.
